VICTORIO EDADES (1895–1985)

Untitled (Workers)

1979

Mixed media

56 x 74.5 cm (22 x 29 1/3 in)

Quick Overview

Employing fluid strokes and an earthy palette, National Artist Victorio Edades creates a bustling yet tightly-knit scene showing of a group of men at work, joined together in a cluster, axes and shovels weilded mid-air in a warm display of diligence and focus. Bringing an element of tenderness to the piece are two workers that stand in the foreground examining what appears to be a blueprint, evidencing the foundation of a home. The subject and compositon of this work is reminiscent of Edades’ seminal painting The Builders (1928) which was featured in the artist’s first exhibiton marking his return to the Philippines from studies in the United States, regarded by critics and art historians as the starting point of modeernism in Philippine art.
