ARTURO LUZ (B. 1926)

Untitled (Still Life)

1960s

Enamel on canvas

50 x 46 cm (19 3/5 x 18 in)

Quick Overview

National Artist Arturo Luz started experimenting with what is now recognized as his signature style during the 1960's. He began reducing color and forms to geometry, opting for precision and sophistication through his spare aesthetic and disciplined lines. In this extremely rare enamel on canvas, clay vessels, a pitcher, and a mug are reduced to silhouettes and shapes that defy traditional perspective. Revered as a modernist master, Luz created a new visual language through his art that focused on minimalism, in the process developing and indelibly redefining the history of Philippine art.
