DANILO DALENA (B.1942)

Untitled (Alibangbang)

1981

Oil on canvas

60.9 x 60.9 cm (24 x 24 in)

Quick Overview

In the wake of Martial Law, Danilo Dalena's Alibangbang series uncovered the darker corners of Philippine society, delving into Cubao's smoke-clouded beerhouses and capturing the raw and unbridled community hidden within the sprawl of the city. Despite faceless characters and sometimes indiscernible backgrounds, Dalena successfully evokes the laid back grunge of lowlit scenes through his adept use of body language. His subjects, fluidly rendered and effortlessly posed, are graced with subtle nuances that enliven them: heads tilted back, shoulders slouched, elbows rested, and legs splayed- portraits of ennui posed masked as nonchalance.
