Hailing from Angono, National Artist Carlos ‘Botong’ Francisco showed his artistic versitality through the entirety of his career. Known for his grand murals, Botong also practiced in print, design, and wood carving. In this exquisite large bas-relief mural sculpture, the artist works with one of his common themes, history, with a depiction of the colonization of the Philippines under Spanish rule. T
he panel’s sections are loosely divided into sections that represent the different facets of life brought by the Spanish to the colony. Yet these scenes enmesh almost organically to create a cohesive picture, drawing and channeling the audience's eyes into directions that allow them to understand the narrative behind the tableaux.
