MARIANO ASUNCION (1802 - 1888)

The Assumption

19th century

Oil on wood

48.8 x 35.5 cm (19 1/4 x 14 in)

Quick Overview

Acclaimed artist Mariano Asuncion focused primarily on the depiction of religious scenes that included angels, saints, Christ and the Virgin Mary. A member of the highly respected and talented Asuncion family, Mariano together with his brothers Justiniano and Leoncio were vital in the development of the Philippine art landscape in the 19th century.

A rare find to come to market, this oil on wood which has been exhibited at the Ayala Museum, portrays the Assumption where the Virgin Mary, lifted on a cloud surrounded by cherubs, takes her place as Queen of Heaven. The painting in excellent condition has exquisite detailing typifying the Neoclassical style: the rich drapery, meticulous molding of form, and great attention to facial detail making the figures and the glorious scene come alive, showcasing Asuncion's fine hand.
