Quick Overview

Arguably the finest early work by the National Artist to come to the market in recent memory, this documented painting with sterling provenance is believed to have been shown at the first exhibition of the Philippine Painter’s League at Malacanang Palace in 1939. The same work may have also led to an invitation for the artist to participate in the Sports in Art exhibiton held at the Victoria & Albert Museum and timed to coicide with the Olympic Games in London in 1948.

Polo Players marks a very important juncture in the Nstional Artist’s body of work, not only as a prelude to his signature abstract style - one already begins to see here a gradual sublimination of the subject into formal elements - but also as an emphatic indication of Ocampo’s skill in figuration. This tranformation of style from the objective to the non-objective would see its full flowering in the post-war years, and in this painting Ocampo’s fluid lines and steady color gradations are already strongly evident, with thin black outlines defining the loosely drawn shapes, the controlled transitions of color creating shadows and textures.
