National Artist BenCab captures the impact of dance and
movement in this bold abstract piece, filled by harrowed black
strokes and ambiguous pallid forms. Having gathered inspiration
from international dancers San Lee and Paulina Wychichowska,
who in turn interpreted the visual artist’s work through a
choreographed dance shown in the Polish capital of Warsaw,
BenCab began a series of works inspired by this performance.
While many iterations of dance forms have been made since then,
none are as bold and striking as this 2006 piece. Divided into
three parts, BenCab envisions the impressions made by the various
movements of the obscured dancers, as they move around the
canvas, leaving impressions of their waltz in their wake, stamping
across in a tenebrous flow. In doing so, the artist treats each
moment of the performance as a piece of art in itself, every second
worth capturing, until in completion, another work of beauty emerges.
