National Artist Cesar Legaspi’s image of three women holding what seem to be stylized palm fronds is almost abstract with his use of fragmented colors to render the work, from the subject matter to the background. The gradient warm colors in the background contrast with the cool hues used for the subject matter. The use of straight lines is anything but rigid, as seen in the long leaves, on the lines of the flowing skirt, and on the crevices in their faces. There is contrast in the shadows and highlights within the arms that differentiates itself from the body, softening the features of the subjects. Amplifying the expressive potential of the medium, Legaspi scrapes the oil surface in order to add more texture, unifying the elements of the work.
