House Under Shady Trees

1963

Oil on canvas

45.7 x 60.9 cm (18 x 24 in)

Quick Overview

National Artist Victorio Edades teases his viewers with gracefully placed shading, using his brilliant reinterpretation of natural light to entice eyes towards this genre canvas work. As a pioneering figure of the Philippine modern movement, Edades uses light to create a post-impressionistic interpretation of a forlorn hut within a mountain thicket. The thick application of plum and beryl hues and billowing greenery was quaint at the time of its conception - a move away from the more traditional and romantic manner other leading Filipino artists of the 20th century saw the country and the trajectory of their art. Nevertheless, Edades viewed the same context and posited it into more modern times, reinterpreting the popular and raising it to what was then an unfamiliar plain.
