Lee Aguinaldo (1933–2007)

Green, Gold & Venetian Red No. 2

1980

Acrylic on wood

56 x 53 cm (22 x 20 3/4 in)

Quick Overview

Lee Aguinaldo established himself among the pioneers of Philippine modernism becoming one of the first aritsts to employ elements of Pop Art in his works. Drawing inspiration from a myriad of American abstractionists, Aguinaldo’s early works featured Pollock-influenced flicks and photo-infused paintings before he delved into his Linear and Circulation series, for which he is most known.

Inspired by Modernist color field artists, Aguinaldo’s Linear series exhibits his mastery of color and incredible command of the brush – as is readily apparent in this stimulating variant entitled Green Gold & Venetian Red No. 2, with his steady gradiation between complementary hues, transitioning from a vibrant green to a rich deep red.
