Cyrille Pierre Théodore Laplace (1793 - 1875)

Conchinchine Philippines (Femmes Conchinchine / Tagals)

Aquatint

27 x 37 cm (11 x 15 in)

Quick Overview

Drawn by François-Edmond Pâris, an admiral of the French Navy, during one of his voyages in the La Favorite, these aquatints capture the dressing customs of the Tagalogs during the 1800s. With Manila being a major port for trade then, the local people’s clothes were subject to the cosmopolitan influences of the foreigners that frequented their community—here local clothes show Western influences, a sign of the receptive and adaptive nature of Philippine culture.
