Carlos “Botong” Francisco utilized various medua to reinterpret Filipino native culture and beauty. In this relief carving on hard wood, the artist retells the legend of the creation of man and woman, emgraving into the wooden panel two gendered bodies emerging from bamboo stalks into a world created by Bathala. Soft curves breathe life into the picture, as the waters and sky move with a vitality that will sustain the newly born creatures, and from whom the Filipino race descends.
