Vicente Manansala

Market Scene

1969

Oil on canvas

91.4 x 91.4 cm (36 x 36 in)

Very few paintings by National Artist Vicente Manansala can match this Market Scene. It is a masterpiece of postwar modernism, and arguably one of his finest achievements in the transparent cubist style for which he is best known.

Only a master such as Manansala could have effortlessly assembled such a diversity of forms in one picture, conjuring up a dazzling folk genre composition of vendors, livestock, and produce. Here one sees the artist refiguring reality, arranging forms by setting these against a series of overlapping vertical panes to create a mirror-like, kaleidoscopic effect. The resounding visual echo is a powerful metaphor that evokes this joyous scene of fiesta bedlam.
